book
design

For this Typography 2 class project, I chose to typeset Natalie Standiford’s How to Say Goodbye in Robot, a YA novel about two high school seniors who connect over a late-night radio show.

I designed the first four chapters (60 pages) and included a cover, title page, table of contents, dividers, illustrations, and acknowledgments. All text is set in the typeface Avenir Next.
Cover & Back
The cover sets a precedent for the design of the rest of the book. Avenir Next is used, along with the first examples of graphic illustrations and sound waves.
Chapters
At the beginning of each chapter, I drew an object featured in the text.
Table of Contents
The table of contents’ design is based on radio waves. Sections (months) with more chapters have a higher frequency, while sections with fewer chapters have a lower frequency.
Dividers
The book is split up into twelve sections. For each section, I made a divider. The divider is a variation of the table of contents with a reversed color scheme and enlarged section title. I removed all information, such as page numbers, except for the name of the month.
Dark Pages & Transitions
When Beatrice, the main protagonist, tunes into The Night Lights Show, she is able to escape from her daily struggles and spend her time speaking to other lonely souls. I used the graphic element of the radio waves to transition from real life to the radio world. I darkened the pages, changed the grid to two vertical sections to separate the guests’ dialogue from the host’s. I also added sound effect illustrations when appropriate.
